William E. Smith, age 89, of Erie, passed away quietly at home on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.
He was born in Erie, PA on March 5, 1925, the son of the late Wesley Charles Smith and Hazel Peelman Smith. He served as a carpenters mate in the US Coast Guard during WWII helping to patrol the Great Lakes and going to Japan at the end of WWII. He was also a sergeant in the US Marine Corp during the Korean War. William was a Fire Department Captain in Erie serving the department for 22 years. He also worked for GE retiring after 7 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Adah and by a daughter, Marilyn Acosta.
Survivors include his son, William “Wesley” Smith and his wife Patricia of Dallas, TX; and a daughter Janice Dyal and her husband James “Buddy” of Bartow, FL. as well as many grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 602 West 10th Street Erie, PA on Tuesday from 10:00 am until the time of a brief service there at 12:00 noon with Reverend Wes Smith officiating.
