William Smith

William F. Smith, age 77, of Fairview, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at Pleasant Ridge Manor West. Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 25, 1938, son of the late William and Blanche (Grow) Smith. Bill and his wife Angela had recently moved to the Erie area to live by their daughter Allison and her family.

He was a graduate of South Philadelphia High School in 1957. Throughout his fifty years in banking, he worked his way from Personal Loans to Vice President of Commercial Lending with the former First Pennsylvania Bank to what is now Core States, and then retired from Sovereign Bank, all in the Philadelphia, PA area. Bill obtained his undergraduate degree from LaSalle University and his MBA from DeSales University at night school, all while supporting and raising his family. He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963 and traveled and served in Germany. Bill was also a professor at Gwynedd Mercy College, where he taught business law.

Bill was a devoted family man above all and was of Catholic faith, in addition he loved his outdoor activities which included golf, bowling, fishing, and snow skiing. He also spent much time with his wife volunteering for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Wilson.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, whom he married on June 27, 1970, Angela Grosso Smith and his children Kimberly Ann Smith of Delaware, Allison Mailliard (Robert) of Fairview, PA and William Bradford Smith of Plymouth Meeting, PA. Bill also has four grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth and Brittany Taylor Smith, the daughters of William Bradford Smith; and Robert James and Aaron William Mailliard, the sons of Allison and Robert Mailliard. Additionally he is survived by nephews, nieces and family.

Private family burial will take place on Monday June 6th at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA. A memorial mass will be celebrated in honor of Bill’s life at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 428 S. Main Street, North Wales, PA on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue) Erie, PA 16506.
