William L. Nystrom, age 86, of Erie, died on Tuesday May 20, 2014 at Saint Vincent Health Center.
He was born in Erie, PA on October 31, 1927 to the late Lester and Elma Swanson Nystrom.
William graduated from Academy High School and served in the United States Army.
He attended The American Institute of Foreign Trade and then was employed at Bank of America which allowed him to work in Bangkok, Thailand and later for an American travel agency in Hong Kong. William was also employed with American Express Travel Service where he handled travel arrangements for the State Department, Library of Congress and the White House. Due to the nature of his work, he was able to travel to many places around the world including Berlin, Moscow and Iran.
He was an avid reader of history books and the daily newspaper.
William is survived by a sister, Carole N. Bloomquist of Arlington Heights, IL; nephew, Bruce Bloomquist and wife Theresa of Elgin, IL; niece, Barbara Bloomquist of Mt. Prospect, IL; grandnephews, Derick Bloomquist of Elgin, IL., Dylan Bloomquist of Champaign, IL., Drew Bloomquist of Elgin, IL.; many cousins.
Friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street on Friday 5-7 pm and are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday at 10:00 am at the funeral home. The Rev. William Coleman of Luther Memorial Church will officiate. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Erie City Mission, P.O. Box 407, Erie, PA 16512 or Salvation Army 1022 Liberty Street, Erie, PA 16502.
