William J. "Bill" Holdnack, 95, formerly of E. 38th Street, died Monday, December 15, 2014, at St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge. He was born November 18, 1919, in Erie, son of the late Joseph and Anna Selleny Holdnack. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was a 1939 graduate of Tech Memorial High School. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Army Air Force and received the European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 bronze stars. Mr. Holdnack worked for General Electric Corp. retiring as Shipping and Traffic Supervisor in 1982 after 42 years. He was a member of St. Luke Church, East Erie Turners and Moniuszko Club, was a member and past president of the Traffic Club of Erie, previously attended St. Joseph Church Bread of Life Community and was involved in the Cursillo Movement. He was an avid sports enthusiast participating in the Class A Erie bowling leagues and enjoying golf, hunting, fishing and baseball. Bill was a devout Catholic who lived his faith every day. He made many friends at St. Mary's Asbury Ridge and was known by all for his kindness and uplifting spirit.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the compassionate care their father received while at St. Mary's Asbury Ridge. The entire staff-nursing, kitchen, administrative, religious-are truly exceptional people who treat their patients with kindness and respect. Our heartfelt thanks to a special nurse, Marijana, for her warmth in caring for our dad and for the joy she brought to his life every day.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Josephine A. "Jo" Pol Holdnack in 2010 and two sisters, Loretta Hatfield and Gertrude Holdnack.
Survivors include three daughters, Diane Rzodkiewicz and husband Raymond of Harborcreek, Margaret James and husband Alan of Fairview and Carol Holdnack and husband Kevin Kallenbach of Girard; one sister, Geraldine Goldin of Erie; four grandchildren, Erica Maldonado and husband Michael and Ian Dunbar and wife Shannon of Erie, William Rzodkiewicz and wife Christi of Fairview and Richard Rzodkiewicz and wife Jennifer of Harborcreek; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St., Friday 3 to 7 p.m. and at St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge, 4855 West Ridge Rd., Saturday 10 a.m. until the time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. celebrated by the Rev. G. William Fischer OSFS and the Rev. Dr. Anthony Alleruzzo. Entombment will be at Mary Queen of Peace Mausoleum with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army and Erie Crawford County Burial Detail.
