William Buchanan

February 12, 1943 — November 6, 2021

William Francis Buchanan (Bucky) lost his battle with multiple forms of cancer on November 6, 2021.  Bill’s life started with another valiant fight… he was born on February 12, 1943 to Francis and Jane Buchanan.  He weighed 2 lbs 2 ounces at birth and was the first incubator baby in Erie, PA. 

Bill was a Vietnam era U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from 1962-1966.  He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent.  He worked for the Erie Times for 25 years in outside advertising.  He was president of the newspaper guild negotiating contracts and pensions for the Times News Staff. 

He had been an active member of Erie Elks #67 for 43 years and Past Exaulted Ruler for 3 terms.  He served as a Trustee for 3 terms and was very active in charitable efforts with a concentration on Veteran issues.  

He is survived by his long time loving partner, Marge DelPorto; three children, Heather Schons, Brady Buchanan and Tod Buchanan; two step-children, Denise (Rich) Bedoya and Derek (Olivia) DelPorto; eight grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kian, Arianna, Haley, Landon, Cole, Royce and Charlie.  He is also survived by his siblings, Dr. Jay (Elaine) Buchanan, Sandra (David) Foster, Candice Bukowski, Ellen (Ned) Hoffmeister and Jane (Derek) Ross; eleven nieces and nephews and fourteen great nieces and nephews. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother Bruce; brother-in-law Mark Bukowski and son-in-law Michael Schons.  

Friends may join in the celebration of life at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services, West Ridge, 3801 W. 26th St. on Thursday November 11, 2021 from 1 pm until the time of the Elks Ritual which will be performed at 2:30 pm. Military Honors will then be rendered by Erie-Crawford County Burial Detail. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Erie VA Medical Center, 135 East 38th Street, Boulevard, Erie, PA 16504 with checks made payable to the Erie VA with Hospice in memory of Bill Buchanan. Send condolences at www.BurtonQuinnScott.com.
