Warren Hohwald

Warren Gould Hohwald, age 87, of Erie, passed away on June 7, 2013 at Sunrise Living Center. He was born in Highland Park, NJ on October 11, 1925, a son of the late Mary Sophia Gould and Albert LeRoy Hohwald.

Warren graduated from Ohio State University and Wilmington College of Wilmington, Ohio. He served in the Merchant Marines for 4 years. Warren was a clinical psychologist for Behrend and Mercyhurst Colleges as well as Family Crisis Services and Frackville State Prison.

Warren was introduced to Quakerism as a young adult and became an active pacifist who was a conscientious objector to war. He was very active in EPJC, was involved in the Erie Peace Initiative, the local and national Audubon Societies, Erie Philharmonic Chorus and St. Stephen’s Choir. He also belonged to American Psychology Association and Unitarian Universal Congregation of Erie. He was a great lover of nature and gardening and enjoyed traveling. Every year you could find him playing his harmonica while ringing the kettle bells for the Salvation Army. All these activities always lead to great storytelling.

In addition to his parents, Warren was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Hathaway and Laura Yingling.

He is survived by four children: Lora Caldwell (Rick) of Erie, Eugene Hohwald (Diane) of Columbus, OH, Geoff Hohwald (Sherri) of Atlanta, GA, and Maria Welter (Jim) of Columbus, OH. He is further survived by eight grandchildren: Kristina and Breanna Caldwell; Andy and Sarah Hohwald; Brian and Aaron Hohwald; Chris and Jake Welter and by his brother Gil Hohwald and his sister Nancy Gibson.

Friends may call on the family on Sunday, June 16th from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th St. (at Powell Ave.) and are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, June 17 at 12:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universal Congregation of Erie, 7180 Perry Hwy (Rt. 97) with Rev. Steve Aschmann presiding.
