Walter S. Bennett age 83, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Manchester Commons in Erie.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa on April 20, 1932, son of the late Merel E. and Alice Stuart Myers.
He graduated from Westinghouse High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He received his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Chapel Hill North Carolina.
Walter worked as the Commissioner of the Commonwealth Health and Welfare of Northwestern PA for many years. After his retirement, Walter opened a woodworking business Nnora Jewelry with his wife Nora.
He was a great humanitarian who enjoyed woodworking and loved dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Nora Novitsky, and a brother, Edward Bennett.
He is survived by his first wife and the mother of his children, Lillian Bennett; three children, Seane Bennett and her husband Peter Hess, Scott Bennett and his ex-wife Rebecca Bennett, and Shannon Hokaj and her husband Joseph Hokaj; three grandchildren, Rainey and Marley Hokaj and Rachel Bennett; a brother, Merel Bennett and his wife Christine and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were handled by the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506.
