Victor M. Gallagher, age 78, of Erie died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, July 11, 2016 at UPMC Hamot following a long illness. He was born April 18, 1938 in Erie the son of the late Morgan and Thelma (Nolan) Gallagher.
Victor was a 1956 graduate of Cathedral Prep and had worked for many years at the Nolan family shipbuilding and ferry business and at one time was the youngest captain on the Great Lakes. He retired from Penelec where he worked for many years as a control room operator at the Front St. Station. A lifelong member of St. Peter Cathedral, he often spoke of being an altar boy for many years and serving mass with the late Bishop Gannon.
In the early 1960’s he served with the Army Intelligence Corp. Victor was also involved with the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts and started a Boy Scout troop at St. Michael’s church. Family and friends will remember the many times he played Santa at family gatherings and at several clubs in Erie. His real passion was his 1949 Ford F150 red pickup truck with “J.W. Nolan and Sons Shipyard” printed on the side. He could be seen driving around Erie in the summer months and in his later years received a great deal of happiness from meeting people and talking about his truck. He was also passionate about his Irish ancestry and made many trips to Ireland. He was a member of the Irish Cultural Society and always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with family and friends. May the luck of the Irish be with him as he completes this journey and moves on to the next.
