Vernon “Barney” Barninger, age 93, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Mary’s East.
He was born in Columbia, PA on October 4, 1923, a son of the late Charles and Bessie Kuhns Barninger.
Vernon graduated from Columbia High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946 serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII. He worked as a truck driver until the age of 65 and retired at the age of 80 working in the office at Penn Beer.
He was a member of Lamb of God Lutheran Church. Vernon enjoyed bowling and was proud of his accomplishment of a 300 game at the age of 71 at the Siebenbuerger Club and also bowling a 700 series. Vernon had an incredible work ethic and was an example and mentor to his family and others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Charles, Nelson, Melvin, Richard and Arthur and his sisters: Agnes, Rebecca, Joann and Catherine.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Maxine Massing Barninger; two sons, Jeffrey (Daryl) and James (Marilyn) Barninger, both of Erie; a sister, Gloria Mae of Lancaster, PA; 5 grandchildren: Eric (Lynn) Barninger, Brian (Mindy) Barninger, Kelly Barninger (Kevin Melberg), Ryan (Jennifer) Barninger, Julianna Barninger (Steve Smith) and 4 great grandchildren: Spencer, Kaitlin, Max and Zoe. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510 on Tuesday from 4 pm until the time of the service at 6pm with Pastor Kimberly Hirsch officiating.
