Thomas Murabito

Thomas Murabito, 66, of Erie, Pa., peacefully returned to his Lord and Savior at his home surrounded by those he loved most by his side on December 22, 2020, after a brief and sudden illness. Born and raised in Oswego, NY., Tom - very appropriately - entered this world on April 1, 1954.

A 1972 Oswego High School graduate, Tom obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater from Oswego State University, where he captained the school’s golf team.  He later went on to own Studio 29 Theatre in Erie. In 1987, he completed his Master’s in Education at Edinboro University, with a primary focus in school psychology. After spending time working at the Gertrude A. Barber Center and the Chautauqua Lake Central School District, Tom joined the Millcreek Township School District as a School Psychologist in 1997, where he remained until he retired in June 2016.   Tom was currently a school director on the MTSD School Board, elected in 2019, where he was committed to making a positive difference.

Tom’s love and compassion was evident to any person he encountered.  Foundationally, he was the quintessential family man and remained unwaveringly devoted to his wife and children.  With a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and wit, he could lighten any mood and enjoyed making others laugh, while at the same time, possessed the unique ability to listen and inspire deep thought and conversation with all.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Samuel and Irene (Cortese) Murabito and brother in-law Donald Braun.  He is survived by his wife of 17 years, the light of his life, Carrie, with whom he shared a very special and loving bond, six beloved children: Michael, Samuel, Thomas, Halle, Brian (Theisen) and Melissa Lee (Bryan), a sister Veronica Braun, sister and brother in-laws Susan and Kenny Jeffreys, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his loyal cockapoo, Checkers, among other cherished family pets.

A devout Catholic, Tom leaned on his faith and was a member of the St. Jude the Apostle Church. He was a very proud Italian American and enjoyed preparing his famous sauce every Sunday for his family during the colder seasons.  Tom was a member of La Nuova Aurora Society and United Professional and Business Men’s Association. In addition, he was a member of the Zukor Club, Sunflower Club, Sportsmen’s Athletic Club and Society of Holy Trinity.

Tom had a wide variety of hobbies and interests, which primarily centered around his wife and kids.  He enjoyed tending to his garden and bird feeders, golfing, reading, long walks, vacationing with his family at the ocean, cozying by a bonfire with a nice cigar and his favorite music, as well as grilling and spending time by the family pool.  A diehard sports fan, he loved the New York Giants and Syracuse Orangemen, but on a deeper level, adored the game of baseball and his New York Yankees and shared that passion with his children.

Respectfully due to current health guidelines, a private Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 10:30 am at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church.  The mass will be available to view at http://www.stjudeapos.org or the St. Jude You Tube channel beginning at 10:30 AM Monday.

A memorial mass followed by a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date where all family and friends will be welcome.
