Thomas Klaus

Dr. Thomas C. Klaus, age 75 of Erie, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born March 9, 1942 in Pittsburgh, PA the son of the late Charles and Bertha Mason Klaus.

A longtime resident of Erie, he graduated from Erie Cathedral Prep, received a B.S. degree in biology from Gannon University, a master’s degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.D. at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara Medical School in Mexico. He also served with the US Army during the Vietnam war. In 1980 he returned to Erie to join Bayview Internists located on West 2^nd St. and then became the medical director for the Lake Erie Institute of Rehabilitation (LEIR). He also was the medical director for Fairview Manor. Dr. Klaus’s professional memberships include the American College of Physicians, American Public Health Association, Erie County and Pennsylvania Medical Societies, National Head Trauma Foundation, and the American Geriatric Society.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice McGuth.

Dr. Klaus is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Nancy Bauder Klaus and is the loving father of Thomas J. Klaus (Jennifer Hurst) and Kristen Sours, Esq. and her husband Peter, all of Columbus, OH. He is the proud grandfather of Emily Klaus, Samantha and Sylvia Sours He is also survived by a brother, Charles Klaus and his wife Emily of Hanahan, SC; brother-in-law, Joseph McGuth of Hendersonville, NC, and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Bauder of Tampa, FL. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 130 E. 4^th St. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to St. Patrick Food Pantry or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 5100 W. Kennedy Blvd., Suite 195, Tampa, FL 33609.
