Thomas Hiegel

Thomas Hiegel, a cherished individual known for his kind, loving, and humorous personality, left us on March 1, 2025. Born on August 21, 1952, Tom lived a life filled with tremendous passion and positivity.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Hiegel Sr. and Marjorie Wright Hutcheson, and brother David Susol. He’s survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon Momeyer Hiegel, of Erie; and his children, Lauren Sheehan (Andrew) of Park Ridge, IL, Kristen Wieczorek (Robert) of Orland Park, IL, and Stephen Hiegel of Erie; his siblings, Jim Susol of Marysville, WA, Tim Hiegel (Karol) of Tulalip, WA, Teri Allen (Tim) of Erie, Todd Hiegel (Lisa) of Erie, and Tammy Benovic of Erie. Tom is further survived by his three grandchildren who were so precious to him: Nelly Wieczorek, Blaine Wieczorek, and Riley Sheehan. He was also lucky to have many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Tom was an artistic, creative person who spent his career as a Commercial Interior Designer and Project Manager. For years he operated his own firm and felt blessed to spend each day doing something he enjoyed. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and was never happier than when he was in nature. He loved sharing his knowledge of the outdoors as an Outings Leader for the Sierra Club. Tom loved to hike, fish, and get lost in the woods. In his younger years he was an avid bicyclist and cross country skier. But most of all, his family was the center of his world. His goofy, lovable spirit will be missed but never forgotten. 

No calling hours will be observed. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. 

Memorials may be made to the Sierra Club - Lake Erie Group.
