Thelma Manendo

Thelma Manendo of Erie died peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at her residence.

She was born in Pittsburgh on August 21st, daughter of the late Louis Bruno, Sr. and Mary Stella Bruno.

Thelma, along with her husband, Louis, was an owner of Lou Manendo’s Meat Market at West 29th and Cherry streets for 20 years.

Thelma was a member of both St. George and St. Paul RC Church.  She was a longtime member of St. George Rosary Society, St. George Legion of Mary and St. Mark’s Auxiliary.  Thelma was a member of the Italian American Women’s Association and she volunteered at the St. Paul’s Italian festival for many years.

At St. George Church, she was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Sacristan for many years and a member of the parish group that prays for vocations.  She was also a greeter at the diocese’s Catholic chapel at the Millcreek Mall and an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph.  In 2010 Thelma was named St. George Rosarian of the Year, and in 2011 she was named St. George Knights of Columbus Parishioner of the Month.   Thelma was a world traveler visiting Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece and the Caribbean.  However, her favorite destination was League City, TX visiting her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Louis Manendo; one sister, Edith Joseph and brothers; Richard, Louis Jr, and Raymond Bruno.

Survivors include two daughters, Marlene Guzman and her husband Albert of League City, Texas and Lisa Manendo of Erie; two grandchildren, Elisabeth and Evan Guzman who were the light of her life.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Monday, September 12, 2022   from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm, a parish rosary will be recited at 1:30 pm, and all are invited to attend Prayer Services there Tuesday at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in St. George Catholic Church.  

Entombment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to EWTN Global Catholic Television Network (5817 Old Leeds Rd., Irondale, AL 35210); St. Paul’s Church Building Fund, 1617 Walnut St., Erie, PA 16502, or St. George Church, 5145 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509.
