Stanley Wharton M.D.

Stanley W. “Bill” Wharton, M.D., age 91, formerly of Erie, passed away on April 7, 2017 at St. Barnabas Retirement Village in Gibsonia, PA.

Born in Braddock, PA on June 24, 1925, the son of the late Stanley C. and Lulu Bollinger Wharton, he was reared after their deaths in 1929 by his Uncle Robert G. Wharton and his wife, Rita Armstrong Wharton in Williamsport, PA. He graduated from Williamsport High School 1943, Lycoming College 1950, attended Bucknell University from 1950 to 1951, and received his medical degree from Temple University in 1955, following which he interned at Hamot Medical Hospital, and served three additional years there in the Department of Internal Medicine. Prior to entering college, he served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946, including 8 months in the Pacific.

He practiced in Lawrence Park from 1959 to1968, the Emergency Department at Saint Vincent Health Center from 1968 to 1990, and G. E. Transportation Systems/Medical Department from 1990 to 1996, when he retired. He was a member of the Erie County and Pennsylvania Medical Societies, American Medical Association and the Erie Maennerchor Club. He celebrated the 90th year of his life by skydiving for the first time.

His wife of 39 years, Joyce Cunningham Wharton preceded him in death in 1997, his brother, Robert G. Wharton, Jr. in 1997 and a sister in law, Mary Jane Cunningham in 2001. He is survived by a son, Robert C. Wharton and his wife Kathleen of Maple Grove, MN; a daughter, Kathy W. Patrignani and her husband Vincent of Gibsonia, PA; a sister Margaret W. Lyons and her husband Fred of Williamsport, PA; a sister in law, Judith Ann Cypress and her husband Frank of Erie. Further survived by four grandchildren, Emily and William Wharton and Victoria and Camille Patrignani and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510 on Monday from 1:00 pm till the time of services there at 2:00 pm in the All Faith’s Chapel. Burial at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
