Sid Booker, 73, passed away on April 16th, 2023. He was born on April 18th, 1949 in Tillatoba, MS., son of Millie and Silas Booker. He was a graduate of East High, Class of 1968, playing basketball, football, and track and field. His senior year, he was a member of the City and District 10 Championship Basketball Team, and was named to the All City Basketball and Football teams, and also took second place in the the Pennsylvania Track and Field State Championship.
He attended Edinboro University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education and a Masters Degree in Counseling from Gannon University. He continued his collegiate athletic career with basketball and track and field, being ranked nationally in the top ten in the NAIA Conference, in the High Jump Event. His sports accomplishments resulted in an induction in to the 1998 Metro Erie Chapter, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He started his professional career with American Sterilizer Company, working 24 years as Director of Employee Relations. He went on to work for Steris Corporation, as the Vice President of Human Resources, and retired from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2015 where he served as the Associate Vice President of Human Resources.
He had an interest in civic injustice and community involvement, having served as the President of the NAACP, Erie Chapter, in 1989, in addition to his board involvement with the United Way and the Boys and Girls Club. He was a longtime member of St. James AME Church in Erie, PA. He enjoyed spending time with family and will be lovingly remembered as the soft spoken, always smiling, timeless gentleman with a sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents,; Uncle and Aunt, Richard Ash and Annie Lee Garner,; He is survived by his wife, Michelle Booker, sons Brian (Iliana) and Miles (Zoe), and daughter Lea Booker,; three grandchildren, Bonita, Brianna, and Ian Booker, all of Houston, Tx,; 7 Sisters, Annie L. Daniels, Diane Booker, and Rosie Booker all of Erie, PA; Josephine Martin (Ted), of Coffeeville, MS,; Lettie Dye (Anthony), Lurine Booker, and Mae Booker, all of Memphis, TS,;Three brothers, John Booker, Richard Booker, and James Booker, all of Erie; his goddaughter Ashlee Parsons (Jared), and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and longtime friends, including Bonita K. Booker and Fred Rush of Erie, and Tony Blaine, of Hamilton, OH.
Friends are invited to call on the family Monday, April 24, 2023, from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 Noon, at St. James AME Church, 236 East 11th Street, Erie, PA 16503. Interment to follow at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, 2601 Norcross Road, Erie, PA 16510. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Service Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th Street, Erie.
