Shirley E. Foll McGill, 89, of Erie, died on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at UPMC Hamot. She was born on January 9, 1928, in Erie, daughter of the late Helge Frederick Foll and Alice E. Nelson Foll Smith. She was a 1945 graduate of East High School, completing 12 grades of education in 11 years, and attended Penn State Behrend. Shirley worked for GTE for over 40 years, retiring as a training instructor in 1987. She was a longtime member of Bethany Lutheran Church until the time of its closing, and had served on Bethany Church Council, volunteered in the office, was a volunteer bookkeeper, Eucharistic Minister and Lector, and belonged to the Miriam Circle. More recently she was a member of Lamb of God Lutheran Church. She was also a member of SVEA Lodge, No. 296, VASA Order of America; Red Hat Society; and Presque Isle Pioneers for GTE. Shirley loved to travel and one of her favorite trips was going across country on Amtrak.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. McGill in 1983; a brother, Frederick Foll; and her stepfather, Edgar W. Smith.
Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Kalie and husband Patrick of Erie; two sons, James McGill and wife Susan and Timothy McGill, all of Erie; a brother, Helge Edward "Red" Foll of Erie; ten grandchildren, Kellie McGill Groza and husband John of Akron, OH, Erin McGill Munz and husband Gilbert, Quinn McGill Biscoff and husband Adam, Casey McGill and wife Sarah, and Bethany, Kenneth and Patrick Kalie, all of Erie, Kristine Kalie Jernigan and husband Jimmy of Nashville, TN, and Staci McGill and Timothy McGill, Jr., both of Lexington, KY; and eight great-grandchildren, Olivia, Adelaide, Sophia, Mackenzie, Nolan, Gibby, Seamus and Atticus.
Friends may call Monday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A service will be held there Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kimberly A. Hirsch of Lamb of God Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethany Outreach Center, 254 East Tenth St., Erie, PA 16503.
