Shirley Dion

June 17, 1930 — April 28, 2016

Shirley A. Dion of Erie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday April 28, 2016 at the LECOM Senior Living Center.

She was born in Erie, June 17, 1930 daughter of the late Luman and Agnes Dudenhoeffer DeLong.

Shirley was a 1948 graduate from Strong Vincent High School.

After high school she was employed at the Erie Times News where she modeled and worked in classified. Later she also became secretary for Local No.333, Plumbers and Fitters Union. Her greatest joy was being a homemaker and caring for her family.

Shirley was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, the Erie Club and was a former member of the Aviation Club and Lakeview Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Peter F. Dion of Erie, whom she married on February 3, 1951 and her sister Mary Lou Cocco of Petersburg, NY.

Shirley is survived by her son, Peter C. Dion and his wife Joyce of Girard; a daughter, Deborah A. Dion of Erie; six grandchildren Colleen Shanafelt and her husband Michael of Hollidaysburg, PA; Christopher Dion and his wife Sharon of Richmond, VA; David Schroeck and his wife Rachel of Erie; James Fuhrman,III and his wife Danielle of Erie; Michael Fuhrman of Erie and Annamarie Fuhrman of Erie; 7 great grandchildren, Ethan, Madeline and Andrew Shanafelt, Thomas (Gray) and Matthew Dion, August and Hudson Schroeck and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff on 5 West at LECOM Senior Living Center, the nurses at the Regency at South Shore and VNA Hospice Service of Erie County for their loving care.

Friends may call at Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Ave.) on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and invited to attend a prayer service on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 2801 West 6th Street, with Fr. John Detisch celebrant

Private inurnment in Calvary Cemetery.
