It breaks our hearts to announce the sudden passing of Scott A. Stewart, 58, on December 31st. Born in Erie, PA on August 5th, 1966 to James R. and Carrie Ball Stewart. He graduated from Girard High School, Class of 1984. Scott, more commonly known as Captain Concrete, had a larger-than-life personality.
A self-made business owner, Scott built his legacy from the ground up by founding Stewart Concrete Masonry in 1988. His talent and attention to detail on his jobs was unmatched. He didn’t stop there, later expanding to include multiple rental properties and Superior Vending. Relaxation was not in Scott’s vocabulary. There were very few things Scott couldn’t do or teach himself to do. However, he would admit that plumbing was his weakness.
If you ever drove with Scott, you couldn’t go five minutes without hearing, “built that!” as he proudly pointed out the many projects he worked on. Scott also had a special talent for renaming people whenever their original names didn’t meet his approval.
Scott found immense joy from having his Captain Concrete stickers spread across the country—you couldn’t leave the driveway without discovering one on your car.
Scott loved spending his Sundays driving one of his convertibles to play golf with his friends at Orchard Ponds, where he enjoyed winning their money. Excelling in barroom athletics, he remains the reigning champion of the Hillbilly Olympics.
Each evening, Scott could be found on the couch watching the History Channel or selecting the next movie to watch with his family, indulging in sweets, and scrolling eBay to find his next treasure. Scott had a passion for collecting anything from antiques to rare comic books with his son, Luke.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, James Stewart; his mother and stepfather, Carrie and Ron Bryson; his brother, Tracy Stewart; grandparents, Clinton and Ruth Stewart and Claude and Annie Ball; uncle, Gary Stewart; nieces, Jennifer Perry and Tiffany Freed; nephew, DJ Bogue; and his right-hand man, Matt Marasco.
He is survived by his wife, Tara, of nearly 30 years this month; his children: Scott II (Michelle), his namesake; Haley, his comedic partner; and Luke, whom he often called his hero. He is also survived by his siblings: Tammy Stewart, James Stewart, Laurie Perry (Rick), and Shawn Bryson; mother-in-law, Cheryl Banda; father-in-law, Tony Lariccia; brother-in-law, Ryan Lariccia; grandchildren, Laylah and Scott III; his favorite pups, Tessa and Ollie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, work associates, and his “guys.”
Scott’s sense of humor, generosity, and unforgettable holiday displays will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind.
