Sam Tanenbaum, age 96 of Erie, died Monday August 1, 2016 at UPMC Hamot.
He was born February 19, 1920 in Erie, PA, one of ten children, a son of the late Israel and Tillie Goldbard Tanenbaum. He graduated from Academy High School, Class of 1938.
Sam served in the U.S. Army during World War II fighting in the 91st Infantry, Pine Tree Division, in Europe and Africa.
He was the owner and proprietor of the Ace Bargain Center, a magical and marvelous second hand furniture store at 18th and Parade for 45 years. He was also a licensed auctioneer of great renown, and worked with his youngest son at Ace Auctioneer and Liquidators, Inc.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Cecelia “Ceil” Perell Tanenbaum on November 5, 2009, and his nine siblings.
Following his wife’s death, he spent his final years at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie.
Survivors include five sons: Rabbi Roy D. Tanenbaum, wife Loretta of Toronto, Canada, Rabbi Irwin A. Tanenbaum, wife Marta of Brooklyn, NY, Robert J. Tanenbaum, wife Esther of Highland Park, NJ, Jerry L. Tanenbaum, wife Roberta of Philadelphia, PA, and Mark D. Tanenbaum, wife Ellie of Erie; 18 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call at Temple Anshe Hesed, 930 Liberty Street on Thursday from 12 Noon until the time of service at 3 PM. Burial will follow in Anshe Hesed Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th St.
