Russell N. Yeckley, age 94, of Erie, formerly of Murrysville, PA, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at Forestview Skilled Nursing Center, Erie, PA. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on August 17, 1928, a son of the late Lee and Zella Carlisle Yeckley.
Russ was a proud member of the US Army having served in WWII and earning the rank of Captain. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Pittsburgh with his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Machine Design. Over the course of his 64 year career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Siemen’s and Mitsubishi, he gained approximately 25 patents and designed the first HVSFG gas circuit breaker. Russ was a member of many engineering fraternities including the Association Society of Mechanical Engineers. Russ earned the rank of Eagle Scout and continued scouting as a leader in his son’s troop for many years.
In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his wife June Ruth McManus Yeckley in 2016, his son Russell L. Yeckley, brothers: Don and Leon Yeckley and his sister Evelyn Craddock.
He is survived by his daughter Norma Buerk (David), daughter-in-law Roberta Yeckley, grandchildren: Ted Nalepa (Kim), Frank Nalepa, Ben Nalepa, Scott Yeckley (Mallory) and Amanda Pierce (Travis), and his great grandchildren: Davis Nalepa, Katherine Nalepa, and Asher Pierce, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Holiday Park United Methodist Church, 81 Sandune Drive, Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service at 4:30 p.m. Rev. Patricia Nelson will officiate. Private burial will be in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont, PA.
