Roger Paul Wiley, D.D.S.

Well-Known Waterford Dentist

Doctor Roger P. Wiley, D.D.S., 84, died on Friday morning, January 20, 2012, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  Born in Erie October 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Edward and Daisy Belle Huff Wiley.

He was graduated from Academy High School, class of '45.  Having been advanced a grade in elementary school, he was only 17.  Too young to enlist in the service, he enrolled in the ROTC program at Allegheny College, Meadville, and at the end of the first semester enlisted and served in the 304th Army Air Force Base Unit.  After discharge in 1947, he returned to Allegheny College and was graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree on June 12, 1950.  Following the morning commencement service, he and fellow student, Lois J. (Vice) Wiley were married.

After some hard-earned experience in home building, he became a partner in Edward J. Wiley and Son, Building Contractors, for seven years.  Making a career change to dentistry was a difficult decision.  It meant leaving Erie with his wife and two children to relocate in Philadelphia.  As it turned out, it was a good decision.  He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961.

Learning that the dental practice of Doctor Harold Hood had not been active since his death in 1959, Roger chose to buy the office and establish his practice in Waterford.  He administered dental exams to the children in the public schools of the Fort LeBoeuf School District, practiced family dentistry to patients in and around Waterford, and after a number of years, took further training in order to practice orthodontia, as well.

He was a member of the NRA, pursued an avid interest in the history of World War II, and was a Gold Circle supporter of Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He enjoyed skeet shooting, hiking in the outdoors, working on personal building projects on his home and property, and traveling over the years, throughout the United States and also to other countries.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons - Doctor Roger P. Wiley, Jr. of Roanoke, VA, and his wife Sheila, and Doctor Lee A. Wiley of Morgantown, WV, and his wife Christine, and three grandchildren, Stacey Lynn Wiley of Santa Monica, CA, Lee Angelo Wiley and Angela Wiley, both of Morgantown, WV, and his closest long-time friend Kenan O'Brien of Hampstead, NC.

He lived his life with integrity, honor, and courage and gave his best effort to everything he undertook.  He was a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

There will be no viewing and burial service will be private.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Erie, PA.
