Robert L Weigel passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021. The only son of the late Orlow and Elsie Heirls Weigel, Bob was born on August 25, 1924. He was a lifetime resident of Erie, and a graduate of Strong Vincent High School --where he first spotted Annette Lupo in the cafeteria and vowed to make her his wife. Bob went on to serve in the US Navy as Radioman 2nd Class during WWII. While on brief leave in 1944, he and Anne married. We always teased that Dad spent his honeymoon in England and France while Mom stayed home. In reality he was headed ultimately to Juno Beach in Normandy where his LST-980 delivered Canadian troops and supplies on D-Day. We are thankful every day that he had just left his locker when a pursuit plane bomb pierced through it and destroyed his bunk. He returned home safely and began a 42-year career at Ervite Corporation, starting out in the plant and moving quickly into management until his retirement in 1988.
Bob loved 40s music and spent many hours listening and dancing to it. He and Anne were a joy to watch on the dance floor. His youngest daughter joining the Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps led to his active involvement in the corps and he served as president for several years. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandkids, and we all crowded into his home for holidays and birthdays.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years in 2008, their dear friend June Torok in 2012, and 2 beloved pooches, Barney and JJ.
Bob is survived by 3 daughters, Linda Harless (Devlin) of Mill Valley, CA; Susan Kelly (Tom) of Grove City, PA; and Candace Weigel (Mark Benoit), his youngest daughter and treasured caregiver the past several years. He leaves behind 3 grandchildren, Christopher Kelly (Erica) of Portland, Oregon; Justin Kelly (fiancee Emily Bacher) of Takoma Park, MD; and Jenna Kilgore (Steve) of Leesburg, VA. He adored his great grandsons, Harper and Milo Kelly, and his one-year-old great granddaughter, Isla Kilgore. His precious companions Bella and Kisha stand guard at his bedroom door.
Due to Covid, no memorial gathering will be held at this time. Arrangements are under the care of the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, 3801 W. 26th Street Erie, PA 16506.
