Robert Shesterenko, age 90, of Erie, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Robert immigrated to the United States in May of 1949 with his parents Marfa (Sarokena) and Michael Shesterenko. He loved everything about this country from the day he arrived and was proud to call it home.
He was a loyal employee at Erie Sand and Gravel for twenty-five years before retiring in 1992. Robert loved attending church and served in many capacities throughout the years. Most recently, he was a member of Church of Christ Savior and formerly attended Alliance Church and Russian Baptist Church, where he served as secretary, treasurer, and in younger years, led the youth orchestra. He was an avid reader, often reading the Bible cover to cover. He helped neighbors by cutting grass or shoveling snow. He helped new immigrants get settled and adjust to their surroundings, acting as an interpreter and teaching driving skills. He took great pride in his yard and garden, having mowed his yard on the day before his passing. Most of all, he adored his family, especially the grandkids, and loved spending time with them.
He joins his loving wife of 60 years, Pauline in heaven, ending their nearly five lonely years of separation. Additionally, he was preceded in death by his siblings Maria Polonenko, Vera Lukijanec and Walter Shesterenko.
He is survived by his daughter Lidia Giles and her husband Michael of Edinboro; his son Paul Shesterenko and his wife Donna of Edinboro; and four grandchildren Bethany (Tim) Casson and Kelly Giles, Jason and Nikole Shesterenko. He is further survived by his sister Nina Rasanow of Cleveland and several nephews.
