Robert Nicholas Portenier, 99, of Erie, died on Friday, October 2, 2015, at Fairview Manor. He was born on April 17, 1916, in Erie, son of the late Charles and Minnie Doehrel Portenier. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was a veteran of WW II having served as a Lieutenant with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a Maritime Pilot on the Great Lakes working for Columbia Transportation retiring in 1979, and previously working as a Deck Officer for Litton Industries for 20 years and for Great Lakes Steamship for 27 years. Mr. Portenier was a member of Lawrence Lodge No. 708 F.& A.M. and Lodge #17 International Ship Masters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Storz Portenier; his second wife, Carol Jean Hohler Portenier in 2013; and a son, William N. Portenier.
Survivors include a son, Robert N. Portenier, Jr. and wife Barbara of Wattsburg, Pa.; a daughter, Martha Stuart of Lake Worth, Fl.; eight stepchildren, Stephen Quinn, Dianne Matters and husband Paul, Leslie Freeman and husband Michael, Cheryl Rekitt and husband Edward, and Lana Quinn Kownacki and husband Charles, all of Erie, Christine Harris of Orlando, FL, Dana Quinn and wife Janet of Conneaut, Oh., and Vicki Abbott and husband Donald of Edinboro, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Heather Dyne (Sean) of Cleveland, Oh., Eric Portenier (Belinda) of San Francisco, Ca., James Portenier (Celia) of Erie, David Portenier (Jennifer) and Daniel Portenier (fiancé Mindy) both of Fairview, Pa., Jacob Portenier (Kelly) of Cranberry, Pa., Charissa Stuart of London, England, and Connie Stuart and Pamela Morley (Michael) both of Lake Worth, Fl.; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Lilly, Helena and Jacob Portenier and Mikala and Christian Morley.
The family will receive friends at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 1 p.m. until the time of a Memorial Service there at 3 p.m. The Rev. Michael G. DeMartinis of Mount Calvary Catholic Church will officiate. Private interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Erie City Mission, P.O. Box 407, Erie, PA 16512.
