Robert Monahan

     Robert Douglas Monahan, age 49, of Erie, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at UPMC Hamot.
     Bob had faced many challenges throughout his life and overcame them with grace and dignity. As a former teacher and track and cross-country coach at Strong Vincent High School, Bob taught his students the value of doing your very best, so when given the diagnosis of ALS, it surprised no one that he would approach this with the same passion and commitment.  Friends, family members, and students, were given the opportunity to witness a heroic effort in this battle.
     Born Robert Douglas Monahan on May 25, 1963, “Bob”, along with his younger sister Victoria, spent most of his youth working on a small farm in Aleppo, PA, helping at the family owned Cameron True Value hardware store in Cameron, WV, and learning to “fix just about anything.”  His father, Bill, and mother, Delores, instilled in him a work ethic that Bob applied to every aspect of his life.
     Bob graduated from West Greene High School in Rogersville, PA in 1981 and went on to earn a B.S in English at West Liberty University in West Liberty, WV.
     Bob was a devoted father to his daughters,  Morgan and Haley.  He attended McLane Church in Edinboro. He also enjoyed bicycling, running, attending events at Presque Isle, reading and watching a variety of movies, especially anything with Adam Sandler. His quirky sense of humor kept his students and friends on their toes.
     Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Delores Douglas Monahan.
     Survivors include his father, William C. Monahan of Wind Ridge, PA; two daughters, Morgan E. and Haley C. Monahan of Erie; a sister, Victoria L. Sanita of Philadelphia, PA; a nephew, Luke Sanita; and a lifelong friend, Diana Hooper of Edinboro.
     There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Remembrance on Tuesday, July 3 at 7 p.m. at Waterworks, Presque Isle State Park, Erie, PA with Pastor Jeff Hughes of Resurrection Bible Church, Sycamore, PA, officiating.
