Robert J. “Bob” McCarthy Sr. passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017 after an extended illness. His courageous and relentless determination was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
He was born on May 27, 1934, son of the late Joseph A. and Charlotte M. Cadoret McCarthy.
Bob was raised and educated in Orchard Park, NY. He graduated from Orchard Park High School, and attended St. Bonaventure University where he played baseball and basketball. Bob served in the U.S. Army and then enjoyed a successful career as a Manufacturer's Representativein the flooring industry. He was a proud, active member of Saint Patrick Parish, Erie Maennerchor, and The Irish Cultural Society.
Bob was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed playing baseball in his early years, going boating, fishing, and playing golf. Bob was a passionate Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees fan, and always wore one of their ballcaps. He was always there for his family’s sporting events and dance recitals. He coached MYAA baseball for many years and was a Boy Scout leader. He made friends everywhere he traveled, was a great storyteller, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved being outdoors especially near the water or on the golf course. Bob loved to travel with his beloved wife. Together, they enjoyed traveling to Florida, going on cruises, and spending time with their entire family in Myrtle Beach.
Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister Charlotte M. Durant.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Corcoran McCarthy, whom he married on June 29, 1963 and had a wonderful 53 years together. He is further survived by sons Timothy J. McCarthy (Sheila), Robert J. McCarthy, Jr. (Dee Dee) and a daughter Wendy S. Williams (Donald). Further surviving are grandchildren Robert J. III (Linsey), Kathleen (Cody), Andrew, Kelly, Matthew, Connor, Patrick, and Lauren. A great-grandchild will be arriving shortly. Bob also had many wonderful cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends that he loved.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Avenue) on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friends may attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Patrick Church 130 East 4th Street with Reverend Monsignor Henry A. Kriegel celebrating.
Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
