Robert L. Laird, age 92, of Erie, passed away Saturday, December 25, 2021 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born on June 13, 1929, in Union City, the son of the late Ralph and Maude Harmon Laird.
He was a graduate of Academy High School, Class of 1947. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War on the USS Macon 132. Prior to his retirement he was a Supervisor at Penelec/GPU Energy for 44 years. He was a member and past trustee of Glenwood United Methodist Church, a member of Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church, a Life Member of Lawrence Lodge No. 708, F & A.M., and Zem Zem Temple Shrine, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Erie, where he was a past sovereign prince 32° and active member of the Erepa Grotto. He was a life member and served as past president of the Zukor Club, and was a member of the Elks, Siebenburger and the Bonita Springs Shrine Club and was past president the Shrine Noble Travelers of Bonita Springs, Florida. He also sponsored the Shrine softball Team at Citrus Park in Bonita Springs, Florida for many years. He joined the YMCA in September 1943 and was a lifetime member. He also enjoyed working on the annual membership drives for many years. He was also a life member of the Times Old Newsies, the Erie Lion’s Club, the American Legion Post 11 and the Erie Zoological Society. Mr. Laird volunteered at the ErieVetsHospital, the Erie Gifts for Kids and was a Boy Scout Master of Troop 28 for many years. Bob and his loving wife Millie were married on September 30th, 1950, and celebrated 71 wonderful and loving years together.
In addition to his wife, Mildred “Millie” V. Hinspeter Laird, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter Brenda S. Laird, two brothers, Ronald and Gerald Laird and two sisters, Florence Laird and Lola Lovejoy.
He is survived by two sons, James R. Laird and his wife Margaret; of Erie and Dan Laird and husband, Tim Truelove of Albuquerque, NM; two daughters, Kathleen Hoffman and her husband Robert and Linda Zboyovski and her husband Jay, all of Erie. He was blessed with 7 grandchildren, Jeffrey and Joe (Julie) Laird, Brian (Brenda) and Eric (Ellie) Newlin, Greg (Lauren), Sean (Bonny) Hoffman, Megan Hoffman Kleck (Matt) and 12 great grandchildren, 3 great- great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Papa never missed a football or basketball game (even the away games) and was his grandchildren’s #1 fan.
Friends may call at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 West 10th Street, Tuesday, January 4, 2022 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at which time a Masonic service will be held, with visitation continuing until 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held there on Wednesday, January 5th at 10:30 a.m. At the request of the family, masks are required. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, PA 16505.
