Richard P. Thorn, of Millcreek, left this earth for his heavenly home on December 3, 2021 at the age of 95. Dick is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Carol; his daughters Cathie (Tim) Dugan and Amy (Jack) Franz; his grandchildren Keri (Rob) Cooney and Molly (Jonathan) Gaber; and his great-grandchildren Ely, Alex, and Anna Cooney. He is further survived by his stepsons, Stephen (Barbara) Peters and Stanley “Bud” (Glenda) Peters; and four step granddaughters, Kathryn Peters, Emily Peters, Lydia (Nate) Barlup and Iris Peters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Marilyn, in 1982.
Dick was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His time in the Navy led to his great passion for engineering. During his 45-year career at Lord Corporation, he utilized his abundance of curiosity and creativity to solve problems and invent new products. After retiring at age 76, he became keenly interested in health, wellness, and nutrition. He and Carol grew most of the fruit and vegetables they ate in their gardens in Erie and Arizona. They generously shared their bounty with family and friends. Until recently, he was actively gardening, working in the yard, and walking daily.
Dick was a kind, loyal, and gentle man who loved nothing more than tinkering and fixing things. He enjoyed engaging in deep conversations on all manner of topics. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service has been planned for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice.
