Richard E. Mando, Sr., (Moose) age 87, of Erie, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Westlake Woods Assisted Living.
He was born in Erie, PA on June 10, 1933, a son of the late Santo and Rose Fiorita Mando.
He attended Academy and Tech Memorial high school. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Army as an M.P. during the Korean Conflict.
He was a firefighter for the City of Erie retiring in 1998 after 34 years of service. He also was a self-employed electrician for 35 years and did property management for First National Bank of Erie for 14 years.
Richard was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He was a life member, co-founder and past vice-president of the Firefighters Historical Museum of Erie and a member of the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie. He was a former member of the Danish Club and the Blue Dolphins Skin Divers Association. He enjoyed woodworking. He was very proud that two of his grandsons became fire fighters in part due to his influence.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Steiner Mando in 2012, four sisters, Isabelle Gianuzzi, Lucy Sziriski, Velma Rubay and Josephine Collins, three brothers, Carl Mando, John Mando, Louis Mando and a son-in-law, Kenneth Rausch.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Rausch and Carla Mando, two sons, Richard E. Mando, Jr. his wife Stefanie and Greg Mando his wife Hope, a sister, Virginia Sonnenberg , a sister-in-law, Kathleen Nichilo her husband Louis Nichilo. Seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc., Wintergreen, 2532 Norcross Road, on Friday, April 2, 2021 from 2 until the time of service there at 6 pm with James Erdman Chaplain of Family Hospice officiating. All CDC guidelines including wearing a mask, social distancing and capacity limits will be followed.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Westlake Woods, Davita Dialysis and Family Hospice for the quality care that they provided Richard.
Private Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
