Richard J. Hopwood, Sr.
Richard J. Hopwood, Sr., age 80, of Erie died Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the PA Soldiers & Sailors Home. He was born June 12, 1935 in Oil City, PA the son of the late John and Eldelene Schoonover Hopwood.
Richard had served with the US Army during the Korean War and in 1997 he retired from Penn Union Corp after working there for 35years as a systems analyst. He was a longtime former member of St. Peter Cathedral and was very active with their Food Pantry. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels; the Upper Room shelter, and loved to spend time in his garden and on the golf course.
Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Poulson Hopwood; a sister, Rita York and 4 brothers; Arthur John, William, Eugene, and Fr. Robert Hopwood, C.Ss.R.
Richard is survived by his 7 children; Cynthia Johnson and her husband Mark of Harborcreek; Shelly DePrato of Port Orange, FL; Kim Neczyporuk and her husband Michael of Lynchburg, VA; Lisa Nelson and her husband Richard of Harborcreek; Penny Valvo and her husband Sal of Hamburg, NY; Kathleen Dispennett and her husband Josh of Greensburg, PA and Richard Hopwood, Jr. and his wife Beth of Timberlake, NC.
He is the brother of Marihelen Egan and her husband John of Franklin, PA; James Hopwood of Oakley, CA; Paul Hopwood and his wife Ginger of San Jose, CA; John Hopwood and his wife Jane of Reelsville, IN and Donald Hopwood and his wife Shirley of Warren, PA. He is further survived by 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, 2635 Buffalo Rd., from 11:00 AM until 12:00 noon at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the PA Soldiers & Sailors Home Patient Activities Fund, 560 E. 3rd St., Erie, PA 16507 or to the Alzheimer’s Association of NW PA, 1128 State St. Suite 301, Erie, PA 16501. Arrangements by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St.
