Richard B. Eisenberg, MD., age 96, of Erie, passed away on March 1, 2013.
He was born on August 30, 1916 in Erie, PA, son of the late Harry and Frances Bukstein Eisenberg.
Dick was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
He served in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946 as a medical officer in Europe with the 90th Infantry Division, including the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of the Flossenburg Concentration Camp.
Dick was Clinical Director and Vice President of Regional Clinical Laboratories of Northwest Pennsylvania (now Associated Clinical Laboratories) in Erie from 1974 until 1983. He also served as Chief of the Department of Pathology at Saint Vincent Health Center from 1949 until 1974. He held many titles in his lifetime, including President of Saint Vincent Health Center Medical Staff in 1980 and President of the Erie County Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1972. He was a lifetime member of Temple Anshe Hesed and a member of the Board of Directors there. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Erie Arts Council.
Dick was an avid sailor and longtime member of the Erie Yacht Club. He loved downhill and cross country sking, and was an accomplished pianist and loved music and the arts.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mina in 2003 and his brother Marvin J. Eisenberg.
Survivors include a son Richard Eisenberg, Jr. and his wife Amy of Waterford, PA, two daughters, Emily Kuhn and her husband William of Philadelphia and Mary Jane Eisenberg and her wife Alyson Belcher of San Francisco. Dick is also survived by three grandchildren: Michael Kuhn and his wife Tatiana Rudzinski Kuhn, Sarah Kuhn and Ivan Eisenberg and three great-grandchildren Esther, Sasha, and Hudson Kuhn.
Friends are invited to call at Burton Funeral Home 602 West 10th Street Erie, PA on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. and are invited to attend a service at Temple Anshe Hesed on Monday at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
