Reverend John David Mumford II, 82, passed away March 1, 2023 in Palmetto, Florida.
He was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, on June 18, 1940, son of the late John David and Sara Kathryn Bair Mumford.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Summers Mumford, and daughter, Elizabeth Mumford Cowan, her husband Scott, three grandchildren, Abigail Summer, Lydia Grace, and Jack Caleb Cowan, all of Mattawan, Michigan. Preceding him in death was his son John David Mumford III.
He is also survived by two sisters, Sara Coleman and husband Sterling, of Kirtland, Ohio and Marguerite (Marge) Polkowski and husband, John, of Gainesville, Florida, his Aunt Ann Mumford (Paul) of Richmond, Indiana, and beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is a 1958 graduate of Wadsworth High School, Wadsworth, Ohio. In 1962 he earned his BA from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA, where he was a member of Sigma Nu and Phi Beta Kappa. He then earned his MDiv from Hamma School of Theology, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio in 1965.
Ordained by the ELCA in May, 1965, David began his career as Assistant Pastor, then Associate Pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Buffalo, NY (1965-1970).
He then served as Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls, NY from 1970-1979, and enjoyed being on the board of the Niagara Falls Housing Authority.
He was Pastor of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Erie, PA from 1979 until he retired in 2007. He sat on boards and committees of numerous community and church organizations including serving many years on the board of Bethesda Children’s Home in Meadville, PA, and Lutheran Social Services.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Luther Memorial Church, 225 W. 10th St. Erie, on Friday, April 28th at 4 pm followed immediately by the service of inurnment.
The Rev. Michael Lozano, Bishop of the Northwestern PA Synod, ELCA, will preside with Pastor Karen Parsh preaching.
Friends may greet the family in the church parlor following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Luther Memorial Church, Luther Memorial Academy, or Bethany Outreach Center, 254 E. 10th St., Erie, 16503.
