Holocaust Survivor Dies at 88
Erie, PA - Renee Goldberg, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 surrounded by family. Born August 29th, 1933 in Breslau, Germany, she was the daughter of James Kurt and Dorothea Silverstein.
Devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she will be dearly missed and is survived by her children, Robin & David Markowitz of Rockville, MD and Jackie & Bob Breakstone of Erie, PA; her grandchildren, Jacob Breakstone, Seth Markowitz, Danielle Markowitz, Abigail Breakstone, and Josh Markowitz; niece, Susan (Scott) Singer and nephew Michael (Lisa) Silverstein; sister-in-law, Elinor Levine and nephew, Jeffrey (Tina) Levine. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Peter & Fredda Silverstein, and her brother-in-law, Arnold Levine.
Renee was a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi Germany traveling aboard the St. Louis. Ending up in England during WWII, she immigrated to the United States in 1947. Renee went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Buffalo, where she met her husband of almost five decades, Dr. Herbert Goldberg. After a career working at various local pharmacies and hospitals, Renee became a fixture at her husband’s podiatry practice. She was an active member of Temple Anshe Hesed and was President of the Sisterhood, in addition to being on the board of the Jewish Community Council.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 8, 2022 at Temple Anshe Hesed, 5401 Old Zuck Rd, Erie, PA 16506, from 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM.
