Raymond L. Strawn of Stuart, FL and formerly of Fairview passed away on Saturday September 6, 2014 after a courageous battle with a brain tumor.
He was born in Spraggs, PA, on July 12, 1932, a son of the late Morris B. and Mary A. Phillips Strawn.
He was a graduate of Waynesburg High School and served as a Staff Sargent / Crew Chief F86D Saber jet in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He also completed the NCO academy at Otis Air Force Base. While stationed at Suffolk County Air Force Base, Long Island, NY he was the pitcher on the fast-pitch softball team that won the base championship 3 years in a row.
Ray worked in the insurance industry his entire career and was with Lakeland Mutual Insurance Company in Erie for over 20 years until his retirement.
He was a member of Federated Church in Springfield and the Stuart Congregational Church in Fla, the VFW, Hope Sound, FL, the State Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Serrtoma Club, Terrain Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Erie, and Zem Zem Temple Shrine. He enjoyed golfing, (recording one hole-in-one) fishing, (many state citations) RVing, and traveling to all 48 contiguous States plus Alaska as well as all of the Canadian Provinces and Mexico.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife Jean Strawn and a brother William Strawn.
Ray is survived by his wife Mildred Dupointe of Stuart, FL and Narragansett, Rhode Island; two sons: Ronnie Strawn of Orlando, FL; Daniel B. Strawn and his wife Laura of Erie, a brother Edward E. Strawn of Beaver, PA; a sister Myrtle Lou Ammons of Inman, SC; four grandchildren: Brent, Eric, Jenna, Andrea Strawn; further survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th St. Erie on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm and are invited to attend services there on Saturday at 11am with Rev Ed Huntley officiating.
Burial in Fairview Cemetery with full Military Honors.
