Paul E. Hazlett, age 89, of Millcreek, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Sarah Reed Retirement Center, following a brave fight with leukemia. Paul was born in Seneca, PA on February 1, 1929, a son of the late Edward A. and Lucy Bryner Hazlett.
He graduated in 1947 from Cranberry High School in Seneca, PA and served his country for three years and seven months in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 1950 he was stationed on Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands, where the U.S. prepared a hydrogen bomb, which was never detonated. He served in the occupation of Japan followed by Korea for twelve months, receiving three Stars of Honor.
Paul was a long time member of the VFW Post 470 and a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union 449, since 1955. He regularly attended Christ United Methodist Church. Paul was employed at R E North Company, Mechanical Contractors, Johnson Controls and Scobell Corp., until his retirement in 1990.
Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid bowler. He enjoyed working and helping others in any way possible. Paul enjoyed garage sales and finding clothes that he gave to homeless men at “The Upper Room.” Paul also belonged to the Crawford-Erie State Police, where he did volunteer security service for years. Paul was very proud of his family and was a wonderful father.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Howard E. Hazlett and two sisters, Helen Stahlman and Mabel Stine.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth Claire Beusch Hazlett, whom he married on July 14, 1956. Together they built their home, where they lived for over 48 years. Also surviving are his three children, Ted A. Hazlett (Carolyn Schneider) of Monroe, NC, Thomas P. Hazlett (Katherine Bender) of Wexhaw, NC, and Carol Hazlett Snyderwine (Robert C.); six grandchildren, Zachary Hazlett, Lauren Hazlett Ligon (Daniel), Michael Hazlett, Julia and Joseph Snyderwine, and Emily Hazlett; and two great granddaughters, Raven and Mesa Ligon.
Friends may call at Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, Erie, on Friday August 3rd from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and are invited to a funeral service there on Saturday, August 4th at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Ron Geisler, presiding. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
