P. Tylon Schuerman, age 90, of Erie, died on Tuesday March 18, 2014 at Forestview after a lengthy illness. He was born in Salina, Kansas, on June 16th 1923, the son of the late Lester and Esther Solt Schuerman.
In 1948 he graduated from the University of Kansas, School of Engineering then attended the University of Indiana, where he received a Professional Engineering License. His undergraduate years were interrupted for 2 ½ years by WWII, where he served in the US Army from 1943-1945. Ty was a professional Engineer at GE for 39 years. He was involved in product design, manufacturing development and product service. He organized and conducted industrial education courses in the US, Canada, South Africa, Europe and Australia for GE and GE customer personnel.
Since 1958, Ty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant serving as Elder, Deacon, Teacher and youth advisor. He was on the Erie Philharmonic Board, the Y-Men discussion Group, the Erie Chamber of Commerce, the PEPP tutoring and mentoring partnership of Penn State, GE and Erie School District. He also helped the Ophelia Project to organize mentoring in the Erie area. He was involved in Erie’s Promise (Colin Powell’s America’s Promise Caring Adult Committee) and was a member of the World-Wide Club called “Flying Octogenarians” (“over 80” pilots). He was awarded the GE Elfun Outstanding Senior Elfun Territorial Award twice, the Erie Junior League Rave Award, and the Millcreek School District Hall of Flame, the Peek n Peek Ski Patrol Outstanding Ski Patroller and the Western NY Ski Patrol and Service awards.
Ty loved tennis, sailing and flying. He was a ski patroller for 42 years. He learned to fly after his retirement and became an active pilot. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, helping to build several small planes and worked in its Young Eagle Program, helping to interest youth in flying.
Ty was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Jean Myers Schuerman, who died on March 4, 2014. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willis Keith Schuerman and sister Enid Schuerman Burkholder Overstreet.
He is survived by his four daughters, Dell Becker and husband Bill of Erie, Nancy Stevens and husband Jim of Richmond, TX, Janet Schuerman and husband Jim Ehrler of St. Paul, MN and Suzanne Schuerman of Washington, D.C., and nine grandchildren, Stephanie and Jeffrey Becker, Robin and Brian Stevens, Omar and Alia Bukhowa, Willis Ehrler, and Claire and John Zippel; and one great-grandchild Tabitha Proper.
Friends are invited to visit at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc 602 West 10th St in Erie on Saturday, March 29 from 9am until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 Noon.
