Nicholas (Nick) Lee Matney, age 46, of Erie, died suddenly Saturday, November 23, 2013 at his residence. He was born August 16, 1967 in Pikeville, KY, son of the late Bascom and Eleanor Handsaker Matney.
Nick graduated from Mack High in McKinleyville, CA. Afterwards he attended AZ State University. While there, he played baseball. When he was young he worked in the lumber mills and timbering. He enjoyed woodworking. He worked with his father to build the families final home in Calif. Later in life, he worked as a machinist. He loved working on and driving fast cars, riding motorcycles, playing golf and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Most of all he loved his family and friends and spending time with them.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Deskins. Survivors include his wife Paula Matney of Edinboro; two daughters: Mistie Byrd (Justin) of Kingsland, GA, and Joanna Matney of Erie; two grandsons Benjamyn and Tyler Byrd of Kingsland, GA; two sisters: Amy Matney-Curran (Edward) of Kutztown, PA, and Lynn Matney-Sagrestano (Stephen) of North Wales, PA; four brothers: James Matney (Brenda) of Conneaut, OH, Major Randel Matney of Fries, VA, Roger Deskins who died on Dec. 8, 2013 (Donna) of Ashtabula, OH, Buddy B. Matney (Roni) of Arlington, VA, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call on the family from 9am until the time of the memorial service at 11am on Friday Dec. 13th at Burton Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 602 W. 10th St., Erie, PA 16502. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Burton Funeral Home.
