Nellie Mae Marshall, age 70, of Erie, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Select Specialty Hospital.
She was born May 28, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of the late William Quigg Marshall and Sarah Gertrude McElhaney Marshall.
Nellie attended McDowell High School and Penn State Behrend where she earned a certificate for Daycare Early Childhood Development. She will fondly be remembered for being the head lunch lady at Burton Elementary School as well as the owner of Nellie’s Penny Candy. She and her family opened their home to foster children and foreign exchange students. She volunteered at the Emmaus Soup kitchen for eleven years and had most recently worked as a receptionist at St. Martin’s Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Martha Wyrich.
Nellie is survived four daughters: Sharon Francis and her husband Murray of Erie, Julie Baldwin of Sharon, PA, Rhonda Caldwell and her husband Lonnie of Stafford, VA, Paula “Pizza” Slupski of Erie and one son: Shawn Slupski and his wife Valerie; three sisters: Leah Marshall of NY, Mary Lloyd of Industry, PA, Lou Ann Borkowski of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers: William Marshall, Jr. and his wife April of Grants Pass, OR, and Joseph Marshall of Cleveland, OH; 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and godchildren. She is further survived by her close friends, Cindy Ayers and Kenny Morris.
Friends are invited to call Burton Funeral Home, 602 W.10th Street on Friday from 1:00 - 4:00 PM with a service immediately following at 4pm with Pastor Joshua Gehly, Church of Jesus Christ, Erie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family in care of Burton Funeral Home.
