Mildred Moore Trice, PhD, age 94, of Erie passed away Saturday August 5, 2017 at St. Mary’s Home of Erie, East.
She was born in Ocilla, GA, on June 17, 1923, a daughter of the late Reverend Andrew Washington Moore and Mrs. Eliza Worshem Moore.
Dr. Trice graduated from Memorial High School in Palmetto, FL, and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree at Savannah State University. She then earned a Masters of Education and Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh.
She began her professional career teaching in Florida and Pennsylvania. She became head of Institutional Research at Villa Maria College; then she worked in Institutional Research at Gannon University after a merger of the two institutions. She was Practice Administrative Manager for the dental practice of her husband, Dr. William B. Trice, DMD and daughter Dr. Angela Trice Borgia, DMD. Her professional affiliations included the American Association of Higher Education, the American Association of University Women, 1972 President of the Erie County Dental Association Auxiliary, and 1977 President of the PA Dental Association Auxiliary. Dr. Trice also served on the committees and auxiliary of the American Dental Association.
As an active member of the community, among Dr. Trice’s leadership activities were serving as Board President of the Achievement Center, formerly Erie County Crippled Children’s Society, and holding a position on the Board at Children’s Services of Erie County. She was a member of the Board of Incorporators of Gannon University and served on the Boards of the Erie Art Center, Erie Philharmonic Auxiliary, International Institute, and Erie Arts Council. She served as President of the Erie Torch Club, Chairman of Area Fund Drive for the March of Dimes, and was a committee member of the YWCA and Lake Shore Firemen’s Auxiliary. Dr. Trice dedicated her lifetime to community, state and national service.
She was an active member of St. Peter Cathedral parish and a past Family Charter Member of Holy Cross Church. She was especially solicitous toward the poor and served on the Catholic Charities Board of Directors. Dr. Trice was recipient of the University of Pittsburgh Volunteer Excellence Award in 1989 and was given the Papal honor of Lady of Pope Saint Sylvester in 2006. This order is bestowed on lay persons, who by their example in business, the professions, the military and society, have lived exemplary lives.
In addition to her parents, Dr. Trice was preceded in death by her siblings.
Dr. Trice is survived by her husband of 74 years, Dr. William B. Trice, DMD; two daughters, Sheila Trice Bell, Esq., of Silver Spring, Maryland and Dr. Angela Trice Borgia, DMD, of Erie; four grandchildren, Mayet Bell Andreassen, Annora Alicia Bell, William Howard Bell and Eliza Maria Borgia. She is further survived by a great-grandson, Jackson Howard Andreassen and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street, on Monday, August 14th from 5 until 7 PM, and Tuesday, August 15th at Saint Peter Cathedral, 230 W. 10th Street, Erie, from 9 until 9:45 AM, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 AM.
