Michael Henry Schloss, born October 3, 1945, son of Edward George Schloss and Bertha Balsiger Schloss, passed away unexpectedly on Friday November 18, 2016.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Dorothy “Dotty” (Koket) Schloss, his children Alexandra (David) Scrymgeour, Michael (Lauree) Schloss, and Anne (Doug) Bauman. He was a beloved “Papa” to Connor, Victor, Ethan, Michael, Jack, Evie, and Alex. He is also survived by siblings Mary (Don) Andrews, Nancy Young, and in-laws Carole (Ron) Hornstein, many nieces and nephews, and their children.
He is preceded in death by both his parents, his sister Kay Hain and his brother Edward G. “Corky” Schloss, Jr.
Mike was born and raised in Erie, PA, graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1963, attended Gannon University, majoring in accounting, before being drafted into the National Guard and serving out of Fort Ord, CA. He helped with the family business, Eddie Schloss and Sons Dairy. He was employed by the Boston Store, while attending Gannon. When he returned from military service he was employed at Security People’s Bank. He went on to work for Erie Manufacturing and Supply as sales manager and vice president, before retiring after 28 years of employment. He was also a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club and Erie Yacht Club.
Mike was an avid sports enthusiast. While football and baseball were his primary passions, he was always his children’s number one fan. He was a voracious reader, most notably of John Grisham and American history. He made friends everywhere he traveled and was a great storyteller. He loved being outdoors and working on “the farm”. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and are invited to attend a Funeral Mass Wednesday at 11:00 AM in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 130 E.4th St. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that, in this time of thanksgiving, donations be made to the St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, 130 E.4th St., Erie, PA 16507 or Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 345 E.9th St., Erie, PA 16503.
