Michael Paul Eldred Morrison, of Fairview, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the age of 86, surrounded by love and adoration.
Michael was born out of love on September 4, 1937, to Dorothy Louise Dunn Morrison and Joseph Paul Eldred Morrison in Washington, DC and grew up in Falls Church, Virginia.
He graduated from George Mason High School in 1956 and from Salem College in Salem, West Virginia in 1961. Following his graduation from college, Michael enlisted in the United States Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. After his service in the US Navy as a LTJG, Michael secured a position with the United States Capitol Police, where he spent the next twenty-nine years until his retirement in October of 1992. During his career with the US Capitol Police, he rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to Inspector and Commanded the US Capitol Division for many years and then the US Senate Division.
While Michael was very proud of his Naval Service, he was extremely proud of his career with the United States Capitol Police. Everyone who ever had the opportunity to work for and with him, truly loved him. He was a very fair, honest, competent, and professional administrator and was well-respected for those attributes.
Throughout the majority of his life, Michael enjoyed the love, devotion, and companionship of his wife, Elizabeth, who he met on Capitol Hill in 1980, fell in love with, and the rest became their history. He also enjoyed the company and love of his children and that of his grandchildren. His interests included travel, motorcycles, old cars and trucks, amateur radio, and especially music. Michael also enjoyed contributing to his community through a variety of volunteer efforts. Ever the optimist, Michael lived his life by the mantra ‘any day you wake up is a good day.’
Anybody who was acquainted with this fine and wonderful man already knows that he was gentle-handed, soft-spoken, well-read, empathetic, respectful, loyal, faithful, compassionate, intelligent, kind, loving, and so very huggable. Michael could make anything better, and he did his very best every day just to prove that.
In return, we loved him and we cared for him. With Michael, God gave us an invaluable gift. He was my beloved husband, my very best friend, and the love of my life. He was our father and grandfather, our precious uncle. He was the epitome of true love and that is what will live on in our hearts forever.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Louise Callaway and Lilian Byers Phillips, an infant daughter, Phoebe Rose, and by his eldest son, Brett Eldred.
Those who remain here to honor Michael’s life and to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty-eight years, Elizabeth; his sons, Duane Newton, Ward Ellis and Samuel Dunn; his grandchildren from Brett (Amy), Anna, who, he was delighted and proud to say, has followed his own career path and John, the sweetest and most loving young man; his grandchildren from Duane; Benjamin, a kind-hearted soul and Joshua, a teacher and talented musician; his daughter-in-law, Amy, who loved him like he was her own father; and his niece and nephews, Sybil, Paul and Joe Arthur Callaway, who loved him dearly; and his Yorkshire Terriers, Buffy Michaela and Daisey Mae. Michael also leaves behind several great- grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4
A portion of Michael’s cremains will be buried at his gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
