Melvin Matthews

Melvin Strickland Matthews, age 95, of Abington Crest, Erie, passed away on the 11th of December.

He was born December 10, 1918, in Webster, PA, and was the son of the late James Orie and Mary Elizabeth Strickland Matthews of Eldred, PA.

Melvin worked at the U.S. Steel Clairton Works for thirty five years. A devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, he loved to bowl with the Clairton Mill bowling team and spend his remaining spare time at his “Twin Pines” camp in Kane, PA.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by the following family members; sister Sylvia Kless of Rochester, PA, sister Lillian Dudgeon of Chicago, IL, sister Wilma Nogy of Belle Vernon, PA, brother James Alvin Matthews of Eldred, PA and grandson Cary Greggs of Erie, PA.

Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn (David) Tullio of Erie, PA, Maureen Matthews of Orange, CA, Cheryl Thompson of Salt Lake City, UT, as well as eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Melvin will be greatly missed by his three daughters and all those whose lives he touched.

Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, from 11 am to 2 pm on Tuesday December 17th with a prayer service at 2 pm in the Burton Wintergreen All Faith’s Chapel with Father Michael DeMartinis officiating. Interment will be immediately following in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
