Max Eugene Alwens, Sr., age 88, died November 4, 2015. He was born in Erie, PA on September 7, 1927; son of the late Eugene Maximilian Alwens and Muriel Baldry Alwens Gauman. He graduated from Academy High School in 1945 and married (Helen) Rose Schneider in Munich, Germany on September 6, 1952.
Max coached Boy's Baseball and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. He sang with the church choir and was a member of the Erie Commodores Barbershop group. Max was well known in bowling circles and managed several local bowling alleys. He served in the United States Army from 1945-1947. He was employed by the New York Central, Penn Central, and Conrail railroads (44 years), retiring in 1989.
Mr. Alwens was preceded in death by sisters Louise Doty and Martha Dodson and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose Schneider Alwens: a son, Max Eugene Alwens, Jr. (Sandy); a daughter Marla Alwens Larson Fulton (Pete); and his sister Laura Alwens Parker Hudson; his grandchildren, Rian Alwens Estok (Jeff), Max Matthew Alwens (Brianna), Abigail Larson and Stefan Larson (Lindsay); great-grandchildren, Claire and Nathan Estok and Charlotte, Ella, and Lillian Alwens; and several nieces and nephews. He is further survived by a dear brother and sister-in-law, George and Carol Schneider and cherished friends Kathy and Jack Morton.
Friends may call Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2014 Myrtle Street, and may attend a service there Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Erik Young of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16502.
