Maudie White

Maudie Louise White, age 96, of Erie, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at her residence.

She was born September 17, 1919 to parents Everett and Claudia (Bowen) White.

Maudie attended East High School and received a scholarship to Mercyhurst College (now University). She received a M.A. from Columbia University. She taught for 35 years in the Erie School System. Maudie was a life-long member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry, Ushering, Choir, and as head of the Alter Guild for 22 years.

She was preceded in death by brothers Elmer (Cecelia) and Stanley (Marie); three sisters: Evelyn White, Thora White, and Virginia Adams (Frank). In addition, she was preceded by a dear niece, Audrey Adams Skinner.

Her round dining room table was the go-to place for anyone needing a listening, sympathetic ear. When her sister, Thora, died leaving a teenage daughter, Maudie stepped up and adopted her.

She leaves behind that beloved daughter Claudia Valentine (Joseph); her much loved grandchildren, Matthew Joseph Valentine and his wife, Seiko and their daughter Hannah Mei Valentine, of Philadelphia; and, Michael Everett Valentine of New York City. In addition, she leaves her sweet niece, Susan Adams of Erie; and many great nieces and nephews.

Maudie wished to leave heart-felt gratitude to her special friends throughout the years (Pati Flynn, Elaine Miller, Olga Loundes, Rebecca Frank, Jeannette Batten, Nicole Heidelberg, Joshua Holman, Barbara Sivak, Jodi Nolf). Special thanks to a long-time aide and faithful friend, Bessie Franklin; and, to Asera Care Hospice for their compassionate care.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 4701 Old French Road, Erie, PA 16509 at 10:00 a.m.
