Matthew P. Lyden, age 90, of Hermitage died Friday, April 1, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA following a brief illness. He was born May 18, 1925 in Sharon the son of the late Thomas and Ann (Casey) Lyden.
Matt was a 1944 graduate of Sharon High School and had attended Youngstown State College before serving with the US Army during WW II. Following the war, he owned the Ye Olde Parlor Shoppe in Mercer where he specialized in upholstery and furniture repair. Matt married Irma Bogolin in 1954 and became a partner in the family grocery store, Bogolin’s Market. Located in Patagonia, they were known for their fresh cut meats and homemade smoked sausage. Following Bill Bogolin’s death in 1991, the market closed, but Matt and Irma continued the tradition of sausage making for their customers at the holidays well into their 80’s. Matt was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic church where he started as an altar boy. He was a longtime Cleveland Cavaliers and Pittsburgh Steelers fan who never missed a televised game. He also loved following the activities of his son and grandson’s race team and was known to read three newspapers daily. He was a member of SNPJ Lodge 31 and the Slovenian Working Men’s club in Farrell. He and Irma could always be found where polka music and good times were taking place. A true Irishman, he loved spending St. Patrick’s Day mornings at the Lube.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Bogolin Lyden who died in 2014. He was also preceded in death by three brothers; Thomas, John (Jack) and Joseph Lyden along with a sister, Catherine.
Matt is survived by a daughter, Patricia Slomski and her husband Philip with whom he resided; a son, William M. Lyden and his wife Renee, all of Erie; a grandson, W. Patrick Lyden of Charlotte, NC and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 40 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, PA on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated.
