Mary Zeppenfeld

Mary M. “Peggy” Zeppenfeld, age 55, passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 8, following a brief illness. Born Mary Margaret Munro on January 6, 1964, she was the daughter of Beverly (Hilgendorf) Munro and the late John F. Munro.

Peggy was a 1982 graduate of Girard High School and earned degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education from Mercyhurst College. She was an accomplished flautist and played Second Flute with the Erie Philharmonic under Conductors Walter Hendl and Eiji Oue. Peggy was also a 25 year member of the Erie Chamber Orchestra, playing both flute and piccolo.

Peggy was a music teacher in the Millcreek Township School District for many years, working at Tracy, Chestnut Hill, Vernondale, Ridgefield, and most recently, Grandview Elementary. Peggy realized the importance of the arts in education and found many ways to make learning music both fun and enriching. Students and colleagues agree that she was an extraordinary teacher!

Early in her career, Peggy took a hiatus from teaching to raise her young children. During that time, she became an active member of the Northwestern PA Autism Society, serving as a chairperson until her return to the classroom.  

This kind, warm, loving, strong, intelligent woman will be greatly missed by her family, her friends and her colleagues.In addition to her mother, Beverly Munro, she is survived by her husband John Zeppenfeld, daughter Liesl Zeppenfeld and her son Erich Zeppenfeld; her siblings Mark Munro (Barbara), David Munro (Kathy), Jane Barber and Kelly Weidler (Bill) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East, Girard, PA on Friday January 18^th from 2-4 and 6-8pm and on Saturday, January 19th, at the Girard United Methodist Church,48 Main Street East, Girard PA from 10 until the time of her service at 11 am with Rev. Andrew Verner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Great Lakes Hospice, 1700 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16501.
