Mary Lee Smrekar

The family of Mary Lee Smrekar is saddened to announce her peaceful passing at her home at the age of 91, on April 17th, 2025. She was born in Franklin, PA in 1933 to Therese and Raymond Hayes.

Mary Lee graduated from Franklin High School and went on to graduate from Saint Vincent Nursing School. She married Edward Smrekar on October 6th, 1956 in Fryburg, PA. She worked at Saint Vincent Hospital as a nurse for over 40 years.

She was a devout Catholic while attending Our Lady of Peace Church. While there, she loved teaching religious education classes to special needs children and was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She loved garage sailing, watching her children and grandchildren’s sporting events, going to the YMCA, going to Ireland but most of all she loved her family. She was very giving of herself always. She often said she got back more in blessings from her large family. We loved her smile. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Patrick Hayes, and many aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her six children, Karen Smrekar, Edward Smrekar, Michael Smrekar and wife Mary, Mary Beth and husband Dan Tupek, and Daniel Smrekar, all of Erie, Patrick Smrekar and wife Diane, of Pittsburgh, along with 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The showing will be on Tuesday, April 22nd from 3-7pm at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc., West Ridge 3801 West 26th Street, 16506. A Catholic Mass will be held at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church at 2401 West 38th Street, Erie PA, 16506 on Wednesday, April 23rd. Burial to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
