Mary Jane Weaver Mansfield, age 88, of Columbus, Ohio, died in Westerville, Ohio on November 11, 2016 after a short illness. She was born in Oil City, Pa. on March 16, 1928. Her parents were Edward Cornelius and Dorothy Dahle Weaver. She was a 1945 graduate of Oil City High School.
Mary Jane lived most of her life in Erie, Pa. and also lived for short periods of her adult life in Oil City and Apollo, Pa. Besides being a devoted homemaker, she worked as a sales associate, secretary, switchboard operator, window dresser and occasional model at P.F. Donahue Dress Shop in Erie and Armstrong-Collier Department Store in Oil City.
She was devoted to the Roman Catholic faith and a founding member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Erie where she was a volunteer and a member of the “Over 50” Club. An avid, award-winning gardener, she was a past president of the Four Corners Garden Club and past president of the Erie County Council of Garden Clubs. She served as a director of the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park and a volunteer at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. She also did volunteer work for the Raymond M. Blasco, M.D. Library.
Family life was always the center of Mary Jane’s life. She was very proud of her three daughters and she never tired of spending time with them and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members. She greatly enjoyed celebrating special events surrounded by her family members who will always remember her laughter and smiles during those times.
She also took great joy in spending time with her many friends and she delighted in participating in community life. She was a league bowler for many years and enjoyed playing Euchre and Bunco with friends.
Mary Jane is survived by her daughters: Brenda Wells (Andrew) of Oil City; Dr. Janice La Boone (John) of Saint Simons Island, Ga.; and Amy Demjanenko (Walter) of New Albany, Ohio; a brother, Edward Eugene Weaver (Peggy) of Mount Laurel, N.J.; eight grandchildren: Brenda Fitzgerald (Johnny) of Franklin, Pa..; Ed Pierce of Guys Mills, Pa.; Jason Schrum (Angela) of Jesup, Ga.; Keith Pierce (Julianna) of Polk, Pa.; Carleen Schrum (Sarah) of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Andrew Pierce (Rose) of Oil City; Jennifer Demjanenko of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Emily Demjanenko of New Albany, Ohio; plus 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents and an infant son.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, 728 West 9th St. on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Saturday at 10:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM in St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers it was Mary Jane’s wish that contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.
