Mary (Gene) Eugenia Lillis
Mary (Gene) Eugenia Lillis, age 80, of Erie, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born February 22,1935 in Dubois, PA, the daughter of the late Robert Eugene and Dora (Vaughn) Pyne.
Mary Gene graduated from Redbank Valley High School in New Bethlehem, PA; moved to Erie for college, and received a Bachelor's of Science degree from Mercyhurst College
in 1956. This was the same year she was married and then expecting with the first of her eight children. As 'Mrs. Lillis,' the teacher, she was loved and respected by students and faculty members from Wilson Middle School; and Strong
Vincent, Academy, and Central High Schools. She taught in the Erie School District until her retirement in 1993. Former students would still stop to talk to her in the neighborhood and come by the house to share stories.
Mary Gene was well-known for her sharp mind and acerbic wit. She was an active member of St. Peter's Cathedral Parish and volunteered in their food pantry and Women's Auxiliary and also had many intimate spiritual friends from St. Patrick parish. She enjoyed reading, gardening, playing Bridge, watching 'Jeopardy!', crossword puzzles, traveling, and weekend household sales.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons; John Patrick in 1983, and Robert Eugene in 2004 along with 2 brothers; Thomas and John Michael Pyne, and a sister, Katherine Pyne.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John C. Lillis of Erie; four daughters, Katherine Kramer, Marcia
Lillis-Tome, Mary Theuerkauf, and Nora (Tom) Dolak, all of Erie and two sons Joseph Lillis (Sharon)of Bel Air, MD and Dr. Terence Lillis (Eileen) of Erie. She is further survived by a
brother, William Pyne (Judy)of Rimersburg,PA; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Thursday from 6-8 PM and Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Saturday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Peter Cathedral.
