Mary (Licato) DiGiorgio, age 84, of Erie passed away to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at UPMC Hamot. She was born in Erie on December 23, 1931 the beloved daughter of Colegero Licato and Carmella Rose Scofano.
She was a graduate of Academy High School and continued her education as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant, and later in years as a Administrative Assistant at Abington Crest Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where she retired after 18 years of service. The most important job for Mary was being an amazing, loving, compassionate mother to her two daughters and granddaughter, Madeline Rosalie Welch who was her pride and joy.
Mary emulated what it was to be a true Christian role model. She brought much joy and wisdom to all that came to know her only to give her unconditional love of advocating for the elderly in the community and to all her family and friends. Mary was a member of the Ladies Wolf Auxiliary, secretary of the Italian- American Women’s Association, past board member of the St. Martin Center, member of the Blue Army Choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the rosary prayer group at Our Lady of Peace Catholic church. She was also a resident advocate at Elmwood Gardens where she resided for the last 5 years.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Joseph DiGiorgio; and infant son, Anthony Joseph DiGiorgio; 2 sisters, Rosalie Siggia and Rose Martini; 2 brothers, Paul Licato, Sr. and Joseph Licato; a nephew, John Siggia and a niece Dina DiGiorgio.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Denise Sanfratello (Emanuel-“Nello”) and Doreen Welch (John). She is the aunt of Charles Siggia (Antonina), Paul Licato, Jr., Joseph Martini (Diane), Charles Martini, Charles Licato, Carol Siggia, Elizabeth DiGiorgio, Darrah Johnson, and Rosalie Lanning ( Bob). She is further survived by a great-nephew Paul Anthony Licato III (Brittany) along with many other great- nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio (Gale).
Special thanks to everyone at Elmwood Gardens not only caring for her but loving her and respecting her dignity until the end. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff of UPMC Hamot for their tireless hours in caring for our mother.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Sunday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Monday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
